Often the unknowing beginner rider (or their ambitious parent) does not see the potential dangers in leaving the safety of the lunge rein and the arena. The excitement of cantering across undulating terrain or jumping too high can be lost when the A, B, C’s for this level have not been met.
If you are an instructor (or potential instructor), you will find these simple exercises and checks invaluable as you train your riders to be the best they can be.
Just as solid foundations are essential in developing our horses and instructors, these are also essential in developing our beginner riders. As horse industry professionals and potential professionals, we should be looking for industry developments to improve safety around horses and to improve horse welfare.
Let’s prioritise the safety of our beginner riders, ensuring they gain the A, B, C’s for a sustained interest in riding and recognise their significance.
