If a horse is unfamiliar, always ask the rider, “Is it safe to approach your horse? ” before proceeding with a gear check.

1. Saddle Fit & Positioning—The saddle must be properly positioned, allowing enough clearance over the horse’s withers. The rider should dismount if adjustments are necessary.
